FACULTY DEATHS

Margaret "Marnie" Andrews, a former faculty member in forestry, died on Oct. 29. Andrews earned her M.S. in forestry from Virginia Tech in 1984. Later in her career, she returned to Tech as an undergraduate adviser, recruiting new students and assisting in their job placement. Considered a pioneer woman in the field of forestry, Andrews served as a role model for many. The granddaughter of the late Governor Richard Irvine Manning, she also raised five children while working. Andrews remained active after her retirement in 1994, including volunteering at Virginia Tech's Horticulture Garden and in Special Collections at Newman Library.

Victor Maderspach, professor emeritus of engineering, died on Nov. 12. Maderspach received his M.S. in engineering science and mechanics (ESM) in 1962 and was a member of the ESM faculty from 1957 until his retirement in 1987. Born in Transylvania, Hungary, he graduated from the Hungarian Military Academy in 1939 and served with the Second Hungarian Army in World War II. After beginning his teaching career at Virginia Tech, Maderspach earned a Ph.D. from Die Technische Hochschule in Vienna, Austria, in 1964. During his 30 years in ESM, he became a familiar figure throughout the College of Engineering. Some of the courses he taught, such as dynamics, were required for all engineering undergraduates.
