Marshall Fishwick, professor emeritus in the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences, died on May 22. Fishwick, who taught at Virginia Tech from 1976 until his retirement in 2003, is widely regarded as originator of the academic movement known as popular culture. He held degrees from the University of Virginia, the University of Wisconsin, and Yale University, and received eight Fulbright Awards and numerous additional grants that enabled him to introduce the popular culture discipline at home and abroad. Founder of the journal International Popular Culture and co-founder and president of the Popular Culture Association in the late 1960s, Fishwick also served as an advisory editor of both the Journal of Popular Culture and the Journal of American Culture. Throughout his career he contributed articles on American studies and popular culture to national and international papers, journals, magazines, and newspapers. Fishwick also wrote more than 20 books -- and edited an additional dozen --in the fields of history, literature, education, theology, and communication. His most recent book, Cicero and Popular Culture, is in production and will be published posthumously. Henry, a member of the Department of Computer Science faculty in the College of Engineering for 20 years, died on March 7. During her tenure at Virginia Tech, Henry coached the student computer-programming team to numerous regional championships and a second-place finish in world competition in 2001. She also served as adviser for the student chapter of the Association for Computing Machinery during most of her years at the university. In 1986, she received the computer science department's Outstanding Instruction Award. Henry served as a visiting professor at the University of Coimbra in Portugal and at Peking University in China. She retired from teaching in 2003 and divided her time between homes in Costa Rica and Blacksburg. Jon Polifrone, former chair of the Department of Music, died on March 11. Polifrone earned his bachelor's and master's degrees in musical composition from Michigan State University in 1958 and 1959, respectively, and his doctorate from Florida State University in 1974. He taught at several institutions -- including Jordan Conservatory in Indianapolis, Indiana State University, and the University of Nebraska -- from 1963 until 1980, when he came to Virginia Tech. At Tech, Polifrone served as the department head from 1980 until 1983, and as a professor of music until his retirement in 2002. His true passion, however, was composing contemporary classical pieces, four of which were written for the principal cellist with the Omaha Symphony and won him a Pulitzer Prize nomination in the late 1970s. Ernest Carl Houck, professor in the Department of Business Information Technology, died on May 22. Houck, who earned a master's degree and a Ph.D. from Virginia Tech, joined the faculty in 1972. In 1995, he was appointed R.B. Pamplin Professor of Management Science. He directed the M.B.A. program from 1978 to 1982. Since 1983, he had been his department's graduate programs director. An outstanding educator and scholar, Houck received the college's Certificate of Teaching Excellence on three occasions. He was the college's first faculty member to be elected to the university's Academy of Teaching Excellence, in 1976. He was the college's first recipient of the prestigious Wine Award, given for teaching excellence, in 1977. In 2002, he received the college's Doctoral Teaching Award. |
